Occupational and Environmental Health Professionals are responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating policies and programs that promote and monitor environmental health, occupational health, safety, and related legislation. They work to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for employees and assist injured staff through the workers’ compensation and rehabilitation process.

In Australia and New Zealand:

The majority of occupations in this unit group typically require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification. However, in certain cases, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary in addition to the formal educational requirement. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

 

Registration or licensing may be required.

 

Estimate salary aud$60,000 up to aud$110,000 per year.

 

Tasks Include:

 

  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating plans and policies for environmental health management and occupational health and safety.
    • Creating and executing strategies for the safe and efficient disposal of various types of waste, including commercial, industrial, medical, and household waste.
    • Providing advice on legislation, enforcing regulations, and implementing prevention programs for communicable diseases, food safety, wastewater treatment, water quality, hazardous substances, and pollution control to improve public health.
    • Identifying workplace hazards, conducting risk assessments, and implementing control measures to mitigate risks.
    • Designing and implementing programs to minimize workplace and environmental pollution, including chemical and physical hazards.
    • Promoting ergonomic principles in the workplace to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment for employees.
    • Conducting inspections and audits to ensure compliance with legal requirements related to workplaces, processes, equipment, and hazardous substances.
    • Providing training to employees on the use of personal protective equipment and safe working procedures.
    • Recording and investigating incidents, injuries, and equipment damage, and reporting on safety performance.
    • Coordinating the rehabilitation and return-to-work process for injured workers
