Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC)

The Mining Division comprises units primarily engaged in extracting naturally occurring mineral solids, such as coal and ores; liquid minerals, such as crude petroleum; and gases, such as natural gas. Within the Mining Division, two fundamental activities are distinguished: mine operation and mining support activities. Mine operation includes units that operate mines, quarries, or oil and gas wells either for their own account or on a contract or fee basis. It also encompasses mining sites under development. On the other hand, mining support activities involve units that provide mining services on a contract or fee basis, excluding geophysical surveying and including exploration. The units within the Mining Division are categorised and classified based on the specific natural resource they extract or plan to extract. This classification includes industries involved in natural resource extraction and those engaged in the beneficiation of the mined minerals. In contrast, manufacturing operations primarily use chemical and electro-chemical processes, such as electrolysis and distillation.
