Roof tiler is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in covering roofs with various materials such as tiles, sheets, and shingles to create a waterproof surface. Your primary goal is to protect buildings from water ingress and other environmental elements while also providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance to the roof.

Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Roof tiler requires a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Estimated salary guide aud$70,000 up to aud$95,000 per year.

Your key responsibilities can include:

  • Installing Roof Tiles: Work with various types of roof tiles, such as concrete tiles, terracotta tiles, or clay tiles. Carefully lay and fix these tiles in an overlapping pattern, creating a weatherproof barrier on the roof.
  • Roof Sheeting: In addition to tiles, you may work with roof sheets made of materials like metal, plastic, or fibreglass. These sheets are often used on commercial and industrial buildings and may require specific installation techniques.
  • Roof Shingles: May also install roof shingles made of materials like wood, asphalt, or slate. Shingles are placed in an overlapping manner to create a durable and visually appealing roof covering.
  • Waterproofing: Pay close attention to waterproofing details, ensuring that all seams, joints, and penetrations are properly sealed to prevent water leaks and moisture infiltration.
  • Repair and Maintenance: May be involved in roof repair and maintenance work, replacing damaged tiles, sheets, or shingles to maintain the integrity of the roof.
  • Safety Precautions: Roof tiling can be a hazardous job due to working at heights, so you must follow strict safety protocols to minimize the risk of accidents.
  • Alignment and Aesthetics: Take care to align and position the tiles, sheets, or shingles in a neat and visually appealing manner to enhance the overall look of the building.
