The position involves providing nursing care to patients with mental health illness, disorder and dysfunction, and those experiencing emotional difficulties, distress and crisis in health, welfare and aged care facilities, correctional services and the community.

Registration or licensing is a mandatory requirement for this position.

Your responsibilities include:

  1. Assessment and Diagnosis:
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments to evaluate patients’ mental health status, identify symptoms, and formulate nursing diagnoses.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to gather information, including medical history, social background, and current symptoms.
  • Use assessment tools and interviews to assess the mental, emotional, and cognitive functioning of patients.
  1. Planning and Implementation of Care:
  • Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the patient, their families, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Implement evidence-based nursing interventions and therapies to address the unique needs of patients with mental health conditions.
  • Administer medications as prescribed and monitor patients for any side effects or adverse reactions.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients and their families, helping them understand their condition and treatment options.
  1. Crisis Intervention and Support:
  • Respond to mental health crises and provide immediate support and intervention to patients in distress.
  • Assess and manage suicidal ideation, self-harm, or violent behaviours to ensure the safety of patients and others.
  • Use de-escalation techniques and therapeutic communication to support patients during emotional crises.
  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists and psychologists, to provide comprehensive care.
  1. Therapeutic Relationship and Counselling:
  • Build and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients, establishing trust and rapport.
  • Use therapeutic communication techniques to facilitate open dialogue and provide emotional support to patients.
  • Conduct individual and group counselling sessions to help patients cope with their mental health challenges.
  • Facilitate psychotherapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, or psychoeducation groups.
  1. Advocacy and Care Coordination:
  • Advocate for patients’ rights, ensuring their access to appropriate mental health services and resources.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, social services, and support networks to enhance patients’ overall well-being.
  • Coordinate discharge planning and facilitate smooth transitions between different levels of care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to the development of treatment plans.
