Metal Machinist (First Class) is a skilled professional responsible for setting up and operating machine tools to shape and form metal stock and castings to precise tolerances, following detailed drawings and specifications. This role is critical in the manufacturing and engineering industries, where precision and accuracy are essential for creating high-quality metal components and products.

Indicative Skill Level:

In Australia:
AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

In New Zealand:
NZQF Level IV qualification, (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Metal Machinist (First Class) requires at least three years of relevant experience which may substitute for the formal qualifications and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities may include: 

  • Machine Setup: Setting up machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC machines for specific machining operations.
  • Interpretation of Drawings: Reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to understand the required dimensions and tolerances.
  • Material Selection: Selecting the appropriate metal stock or castings for the machining process based on the project requirements.
  • Machining Operations: Performing various machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and threading to shape and form metal components.
  • Precision Machining: Working with fine tolerances and measurements to ensure that the finished product meets the required specifications.
  • Quality Control: Checking and inspecting machined parts using precision measuring instruments to ensure they meet the specified dimensions and quality standards.
  • Tooling and Tool Maintenance: Selecting the appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and jigs for the machining process and maintaining them in good working condition.
  • Safety and Cleanliness: Adhering to safety guidelines and maintaining a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshooting any issues that arise during the machining process and making adjustments as needed to achieve the desired results.
  • Documentation: Recording and maintaining accurate records of machining processes, tooling used, and any issues encountered.
