A Driller (also known as Drilling Plant Operator) is responsible for assembling, positioning, and operating a drilling rig and related equipment to extract ore, liquids, or gases from the earth. This role is crucial in various industries, including mining, oil and gas exploration, and geothermal energy production.

Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

In New Zealand:
NZQF Level II or III qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

A driller requires relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

Registration or licensing may be required. Skill level 4.

Estimated salary guide aud$80,000 up to aud$150,000 per year.

Your key responsibilities may vary depending on the specific mining operation and the role you hold within the industry:

  • Rig Assembly: Assembling and setting up the drilling rig and all necessary equipment for the drilling operation.
  • Positioning: Ensuring that the drilling rig is positioned accurately at the designated drilling site.
  • Operation: Operating the drilling rig and related machinery to drill into the earth’s surface or subsurface.
  • Extraction: Extracting ores, liquids (such as oil or water), or gases from the earth during the drilling process.
  • Safety: Adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of themselves and their team members.
  • Maintenance: Conducting routine maintenance and repairs on the drilling equipment to ensure its proper functioning.
  • Monitoring: Monitoring drilling progress and making adjustments as needed to achieve the desired results.
  • Sample Collection: Collecting samples of the extracted materials for analysis and evaluation.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and best practices during drilling operations.
  • Reporting: Maintaining accurate records and reporting drilling progress, issues encountered, and any potential improvements.
