Crane, Hoist or Lift Operator Crane, Hoist, or Lift Operator is responsible for operating stationary and mobile cranes, hoists, lifts, and winches to lift, move, and place materials, equipment, and people in various settings such as building sites, factories, mines, sawmills, wharves, and shipyards.

Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level IV qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Crane, Hoist and Lift Operators requires relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities may include: 

  • Operating Machinery: Operating a variety of cranes, hoists, lifts, and winches to lift and move heavy loads and materials.
  • Safety Precautions: Adhering to strict safety guidelines and protocols to ensure the safety of the operator, other workers, and the surrounding environment.
  • Load Inspection: Inspecting and verifying loads for weight, size, and stability before lifting or moving.
  • Positioning: Ensuring that the crane or lifting equipment is properly positioned and stabilized before lifting or lowering loads.
  • Communication: Maintaining clear communication with other workers on the ground using hand signals, radios, or other communication devices.
  • Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance and inspections on the equipment to ensure proper functioning and identifying any issues that need attention.
  • Load Handling: Safely lifting, moving, and placing materials, equipment, and sometimes personnel at designated locations.
  • Load Rigging: Rigging loads securely and attaching them to the crane or hoist using appropriate methods and equipment.
  • Environmental Awareness: Being aware of potential hazards and obstacles in the work area and taking appropriate precautions.
  • Compliance: Adhering to relevant regulations and industry standards for crane and hoist operations.
