Production engineers are responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the design, construction, modification, ongoing performance, and maintenance of equipment and machines within industrial plants. They also handle the management and planning of manufacturing activities to ensure efficient and effective operations.

Production engineers require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification, reflecting the level of skill needed. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to the formal qualification. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Registration or licensing might be a prerequisite in some instances.

Estimate salary aud$80,000 up to aud$140,000 per year.

Tasks Include:

  • Equipment and Machine Design: Planning and designing equipment and machines for production processes. Analyse production requirements, develop technical specifications, and design systems that optimize productivity, quality, and safety. Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure the efficient operation of equipment and machines.
  • Process Planning and Optimization: Developing and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and productivity. Analyse existing processes, identify areas for improvement, and develop strategies to streamline operations, reduce waste, and enhance quality. Utilise tools such as Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to drive process optimisation.
  • Equipment Installation and Maintenance: Overseeing the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of production equipment and machines. Coordinate with contractors, technicians, and maintenance teams to ensure proper installation and functionality. Develop maintenance schedules, conduct inspections, and perform preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and minimise downtime.
  • Production Management: Managing and planning manufacturing activities to ensure smooth operations and meet production targets. Develop production schedules, coordinate resources, monitor progress, and address any issues that may impact production efficiency. Optimise production workflows, allocate resources effectively, and implement measures to improve overall production performance.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Implementing quality control measures to ensure product quality and compliance with standards. Develop and implement quality control processes, conduct inspections, and perform tests to verify adherence to specifications. Collaborate with quality assurance teams to identify and resolve quality issues and continuously improve product quality.
  • Cost and Resource Optimization: Identifying opportunities to optimise costs and resources within the production process. Analyse production costs, identify cost-saving measures, and optimise resource utilisation to improve overall operational efficiency. Consider factors such as material usage, energy consumption, and labour efficiency to drive cost optimisation.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and implementing safety measures within the production environment. Assess safety risks, implement safety protocols, and promote a safe working environment. Conduct safety audits, provide training on safety practices, and continuously monitor and improve safety procedures.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including engineers, technicians, and managers, to achieve production goals. Communicate effectively, provide guidance, and ensure alignment with project requirements and production schedules. Work closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and incorporate them into production plans and processes.
