Mechanical engineers are responsible for planning, designing, organising, and overseeing the assembly, formation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of mechanical and process plant and installations. They ensure the efficient functioning and maintenance of these systems.

Indicative Skill Level:

Mechanical engineers require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification, reflecting the level of skill needed. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to the formal qualification. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Registration or licensing might be a prerequisite in some instances.

Tasks Include:

  • Design and Development: Planning and designing mechanical systems, components, and equipment. Analyse project requirements, create detailed designs and specifications, and utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to develop 2D and 3D models. Consider factors such as functionality, performance, safety, and manufacturability.
  • System Installation and Commissioning: Overseeing the assembly, installation, and commissioning of mechanical systems. Coordinate with contractors, technicians, and other professionals to ensure proper system integration and functionality. Conduct inspections, perform tests, and troubleshoot issues to ensure successful system operation.
  • Operation and Maintenance: Monitoring and maintaining mechanical systems to ensure their efficient functioning. Develop maintenance schedules, conduct inspections, and perform preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Analyse system performance data, identify issues, and implement measures to optimise system efficiency and reliability.
  • Process Improvement and Optimization: Identifying opportunities for process improvement and optimization within mechanical systems. Analyse system performance, assess inefficiencies, and propose and implement solutions to enhance performance, reduce energy consumption, and minimise waste. Apply principles of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement to drive operational excellence.
  • Material and Component Selection: Selecting appropriate materials and components for mechanical systems. Evaluate material properties, cost, availability, and suitability for specific applications. Analyse performance requirements and specifications to ensure proper material selection and compatibility with the system.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Implementing quality control measures to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Develop and implement quality control processes, conduct inspections, and perform tests to verify adherence to requirements. Collaborate with quality assurance teams and work to continuously improve product quality and reliability.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Assess safety risks, implement safety measures, and design systems with safety considerations in mind. Ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations, conduct risk assessments, and promote a safe working environment.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including engineers, technicians, and project managers, to achieve project goals. Communicate technical information effectively, provide guidance, and ensure alignment with project requirements. Work with stakeholders to understand their needs and incorporate them into mechanical designs and systems.
