Chemical engineers play a crucial role in designing and preparing specifications for chemical process systems, overseeing the construction and operation of commercial-scale chemical plants, and supervising the industrial processing and fabrication of products that undergo physical and chemical changes.

Chemical engineers require a bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification, reflecting the level of expertise involved. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Registration or licensing might be a prerequisite in some instances.

Estimate salary aud$80,000 up to aud$150,000 per year.

Tasks Include:

  • Process Design and Optimisation: Designing chemical processes and systems to efficiently transform raw materials into desired products. Assesses process requirements, performs calculations, and develops process flow diagrams and equipment specifications. Optimise processes for safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Plant Construction and Operation: Overseeing the construction, commissioning, and operation of chemical plants. Collaborates with construction teams, monitors progress, and ensures compliance with design specifications and safety standards. Provide technical expertise during plant start-up and troubleshoot operational issues to ensure smooth plant operation.
  • Process Safety Management: Managing process safety and risk assessment in chemical plants. Identifies potential hazards, evaluates risks, and implements safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with regulations. Develop and enforce safety protocols, conduct safety audits, and train personnel on safety procedures.
  • Process Optimisation and Troubleshooting: Analysing and optimising chemical processes to improve efficiency, yield, and quality. Monitors process performance, analyses data, and identifies areas for improvement. Troubleshoot process issues, investigate deviations, and implement corrective actions to maintain optimal process conditions.
  • Product Development and Scale-up: Collaborating with research and development teams to scale up laboratory processes for commercial production. Translates lab-scale processes into large-scale manufacturing operations, considering factors such as product quality, yield, and cost. Optimise production parameters and conduct trials to ensure successful product scale-up.
  • Environmental and Sustainability Considerations: Incorporating environmental and sustainability factors into process design and operation. Engineer assesses the environmental impact of processes and develops strategies to minimize waste generation, energy consumption, and emissions. Explore and implement sustainable practices, such as resource recycling and alternative energy sources.
  • Team Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including chemists, technicians, and operators, to achieve project goals. Communicates technical information effectively, provides guidance, and fosters teamwork. Interact with clients, suppliers, and regulatory authorities to address project requirements and ensure compliance.
