The Systems Administrator (also known as Systems Manager)is responsible for planning, developing, installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and supporting an operating system and its associated server hardware, software, and databases. Their primary objective is to ensure the optimum integrity, security, backup, and performance of the system.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Planning and Development: Collaborating with stakeholders to understand system requirements and designing an appropriate system architecture. This involves selecting and configuring server hardware, installing the operating system, and setting up necessary software components.
  • Installation and Configuration: Deploying the operating system and server software onto designated hardware. Responsible for configuring network settings, user accounts, access controls, and system parameters to optimize performance and security.
  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Monitoring the system for issues, diagnosing problems, and resolving them in a timely manner. This includes performing regular system checks, applying patches and updates, and conducting preventive maintenance tasks to ensure system stability.
  • Support and User Assistance: Assisting users with system-related problems and providing technical support. Addresses user queries, troubleshoots issues, and offers guidance on system usage and best practices.
  • System Integrity and Security: Implementing measures to safeguard system integrity and security. This includes setting up firewalls, access controls, and intrusion detection systems. Regularly reviews security protocols, performs vulnerability assessments, and enforces compliance with security policies.
  • Backup and Recovery: Developing and implementing backup and recovery strategies to protect against data loss and system failures. Ensures regular backups of critical data and system configurations, tests recovery procedures, and maintains documentation for efficient system restoration.
  • Performance Optimization: Monitoring system performance, analysing resource utilization, and optimizing system parameters for enhanced efficiency. Identifies and resolves performance bottlenecks, tunes the operating system, and optimizes server configurations to maximize system performance.

The Systems Administrator plans, develops, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and supports an operating system and its associated server hardware, software, and databases. You prioritise system integrity, security, backup, and performance to ensure a stable and efficient computing environment for users.
