Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

Civil engineering draftsperson requires a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities can include:

  • Technical Drawings: Create detailed technical drawings and plans, including site plans, elevations, cross-sections, and construction details, using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Supporting Engineers: Work closely with Civil Engineering Professionals and Engineering Technologists to understand project requirements and translate their design concepts into accurate drawings and documentation.
  • Drafting for Civil Projects: Focus on various civil engineering projects, such as roads, bridges, highways, water supply systems, drainage systems, and other infrastructure projects.
  • Plan Interpretation: Interpret engineering plans and specifications to ensure accurate representation in their drawings, adhering to industry standards and relevant regulations.
  • Material Specifications: Include specifications for construction materials and dimensions in their drawings, ensuring that they meet the project’s design requirements.
  • Design Modifications: Assist in making design modifications to meet specific project needs or address engineering challenges.
  • Quantity Take-off: Perform quantity take-offs, estimating the quantities of materials needed for construction projects.
  • Quality Control: Review their own work for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that all drawings and plans meet the required quality standards.
  • Coordination with Engineers: Collaborate closely with Civil Engineers and other team members to address design changes, resolve technical issues, and provide support during the project lifecycle.
  • Drawing Updates: As projects progress, you update drawings to reflect any changes made during construction or as directed by engineers.
  • Compliance and Regulations: Ensure that drawings and plans comply with relevant engineering standards, local regulations, and safety codes.
  • Document Management: Maintain organised records of drawings, revisions, and other project-related documentation.
  • Licensing and Registration: In some states or territories, you may be required to obtain registration or licensing to practice professionally.
