Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems in various settings, such as residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic requires a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Estimated salary guide aud$70,000 up to aud$100,000 per year.

Your key responsibilities can include:

  • Installation: Responsible for installing new air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including ductwork, pipes, wiring, and control systems, according to engineering specifications and safety standards.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance of existing air conditioning and refrigeration systems is crucial to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency. Mechanics inspect, clean, and service components like compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, and filters.
  • Troubleshooting: When systems malfunction, you diagnose the issues and perform necessary repairs. You use tools and diagnostic equipment to identify problems with motors, switches, thermostats, and other components.
  • Refrigerant Handling: Proper handling and disposal of refrigerants are critical due to their environmental impact. You must be knowledgeable about regulations regarding refrigerant usage and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Electrical Work: Since air conditioning and refrigeration systems involve electrical components, you must be capable of working with electrical wiring, switches, and control panels.
  • Testing and Commissioning: After installation or repairs, you test the systems to ensure they are functioning correctly and perform any necessary adjustments.
  • Customer Service: You interact with clients, providing advice on system maintenance, energy efficiency, and suggesting appropriate upgrades or replacements.
  • Record-Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and installations is essential for future reference and compliance with regulations.
  • Safety Compliance: Must adhere to safety standards and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, and ensure the safety of themselves and others on the job site.
  • Upgrading Systems: As technology evolves, you may be involved in upgrading older systems to more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly options.
  • Follow Regulations: You need to stay updated with the latest industry regulations, safety standards, and codes related to air conditioning and refrigeration work.
