Construction Estimator (also known as building estimator) plays a vital role in the construction industry by preparing and delivering estimates and cost plans for construction projects up to the tender settlement stage. Your responsibilities involve calculating the anticipated costs of construction projects, helping clients and contractors make informed decisions, and contributing to the successful execution of construction contracts.
Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)
Construction Estimators require a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities can include:
- Project Evaluation: Evaluate construction project requirements by studying architectural plans, specifications, and other project documents. You analyse the scope of work, materials, labour, and equipment needed for the project.
- Cost Estimation: Calculate the estimated costs of construction projects based on the project’s scope and specifications. You consider factors such as material costs, labour rates, subcontractor quotes, equipment expenses, and any other relevant costs.
- Quantity Take-off: Perform quantity take-offs, which involve determining the quantities of materials and resources required for different aspects of the project, such as concrete, steel, bricks, and other construction materials.
- Vendor and Supplier Communication: Interact with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to obtain quotes and pricing information for materials and services.
- Cost Planning: Develop cost plans that outline the breakdown of project costs, including labour, materials, equipment, overheads, and contingencies.
- Budgeting Support: Assist clients and project managers in establishing budgets for construction projects based on their cost estimates and cost plans.
- Bid Preparation: Prepare detailed bid proposals that include accurate cost estimates and supporting documentation for submission during the tendering process.
- Risk Assessment: Assess potential risks and uncertainties that may impact project costs and timelines and incorporate contingencies in the cost estimates.
- Cost Optimisation: Explore cost-saving alternatives, value engineering options, and cost-effective strategies to help clients achieve their project goals within budgetary constraints.
- Tendering Support: Collaborate with project teams during the tendering process, answering queries from bidders, and participating in bid evaluations and negotiations.
- Cost Tracking and Reporting: During the construction phase, you may track actual costs against the estimated costs and provide regular reports to project stakeholders to monitor project finances.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all cost estimates and plans comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and contractual requirements.
