Carpenter and joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with wood, plywood, wallboard, and other materials to construct and install structures, fixtures, and fittings in various building projects. You are proficient in both carpentry and joinery techniques, combining the skills of cutting, shaping, and fitting timber parts to create functional and aesthetically pleasing structures.
Indicative Skill Level:
In Australia:
AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
Carpenter and joiner requires a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities can include:
- Construction and Installation: Involved in the construction and installation of wooden structures such as walls, floors, roofs, partitions, and staircases. You use their knowledge of building principles and measurements to ensure precise and sturdy installations.
- Fixture Installation: Install fixtures made of wood, such as doors, windows, cabinets, shelves, and skirting boards. You ensure that these fixtures fit well within the designated spaces and function properly.
- Cutting and Shaping Timber: Cut and shape timber and other materials using various hand tools and power tools like saws, chisels, planers, and routers. You follow project specifications and measurements to create precise components.
- Joinery Work: Involves creating intricate and precise connections between wooden parts. You use techniques like mortise and tenon joints, dovetail joints, and box joints to assemble furniture and other wooden structures.
- Reading and Interpreting Plans: Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and drawings to understand project requirements and execute tasks accordingly.
- Custom Fabrication: You may work on custom projects, such as crafting bespoke furniture or unique architectural elements that require specialised skills and attention to detail.
- Renovation and Repair: Involved in renovation projects, where they may repair or replace damaged wooden structures and fixtures to restore buildings to their original or improved state.
- Collaborating with Other Trades: Work closely with other construction professionals, such as architects, designers, electricians, and plumbers, to ensure the seamless integration of wooden elements into the overall construction project.
- Using Sustainable Practices: You may focus on using sustainable materials and practices, promoting environmentally friendly construction methods.
- Workplace Safety: Prioritise safety in their work environment, using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
