Aeronautical engineers are responsible for performing and overseeing engineering work related to the design, development, manufacture, maintenance, and modification of aircraft for flight. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aircraft.

Aeronautical engineers require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in the field. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required for practicing as an aeronautical engineer. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Tasks Include:
- Designing and developing aircraft: Work on the conceptualisation, design, and development of aircraft, including the aerodynamics, structures, propulsion systems, control systems, and other related components.
- Conducting feasibility studies: Assess the feasibility of aircraft design and development projects, considering factors such as performance requirements, safety regulations, cost-effectiveness, and technological advancements.
- Testing and analysis: Perform testing and analysis of aircraft components, systems, and structures to ensure they meet safety, performance, and quality standards. This involves conducting simulations, wind tunnel tests, and other evaluation methods.
- Manufacturing oversight: Oversee the manufacturing and production processes of aircraft, collaborating with production teams and suppliers to ensure adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintenance and modification: Maintenance, repair, and modification of aircraft throughout their lifecycle. Analyse and address issues related to performance, safety, and reliability, and develop solutions for enhancements or upgrades.
- Compliance with regulations: Ensure compliance with aviation regulations and standards set by regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Consider factors like airworthiness, safety, and environmental impact.
- Research and development: Actively engage in research and development activities to explore new technologies, materials, and processes that can improve aircraft performance, efficiency, and safety.
- Project management: Take on project management responsibilities, including budgeting, resource allocation, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams working on aircraft development or improvement projects.
- Documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate records, prepare technical documentation, and provide reports on the progress, findings, and recommendations related to aircraft engineering activities.
- Professional development: Stay updated with industry advancements, participate in professional development activities, and may pursue further certifications or licenses to enhance their expertise and credibility in the field.
