In Australia university tutors’ primary responsibilities are to conduct tutorials in one or more subjects within a prescribed course of study at a university. Tutorials are smaller group sessions that complement the main lectures and provide students with an opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and deepen their understanding of the course material.

University tutors require a bachelor degree or higher qualification. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary, in addition to the formal qualification. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Your key responsibilities can include:
- Teaching Assistance: You assist in delivering course content and supporting the lead lecturer in teaching activities. This may involve conducting tutorials, workshops, or laboratory sessions, where they explain and discuss course material, answer questions, and provide clarifications to help students understand the material better.
- Small Group Instruction: Work with smaller groups of students in tutorials or discussion sessions. This enables more personalised attention and interaction, allowing students to ask questions and engage more actively in the learning process.
- Grading and Assessment: Involve in grading assignments, tests, quizzes, and other assessments. They provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their academic performance and understanding of the subject matter.
- Academic Support: Offer academic support to students outside of regular class sessions. You may hold office hours, where students can seek additional help, guidance, or clarification on course content or assignments.
- Facilitating Discussions: Facilitate discussions on course topics, encouraging students to think critically and engage in academic discourse. This helps students develop their analytical and communication skills.
- Administrative Tasks: Assist in administrative tasks related to the course, such as record-keeping, managing attendance, and organising course materials.
- Providing Resources: Create supplementary materials, study guides, or resources to complement the course content and assist students in their learning process.
- Maintaining a Supportive Learning Environment: Play a crucial role in fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions and participating actively in discussions.
- Subject Knowledge and Development: You are expected to have a strong understanding of the subject matter and stay up-to-date with developments in their field of study. Continuous professional development helps tutors enhance their teaching abilities and subject expertise.
University tutors typically work under the guidance of the lead lecturer or course coordinator.
