Materials engineers conduct investigations into the properties of various materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and others. They assess and develop the engineering and commercial applications of these materials. By examining their characteristics, they aim to understand how materials can be effectively utilised and improved in different industries and applications.

Material engineers require a bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification, reflecting the level of expertise involved. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
Registration or licensing might be a prerequisite in some instances.
Estimate salary aud$80,000 up to aud$150,000 per year.
Tasks Include:
- Materials Research and Development: Conducting research to understand the properties, behaviour, and performance of different materials. Investigates the composition, structure, and processing of materials to uncover their unique properties and potential applications. Explore new materials and evaluate their suitability for specific purposes.
- Material Testing and Characterization: Performing tests and experiments to assess the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of materials. Utilise advanced laboratory techniques and equipment to measure properties such as strength, hardness, elasticity, corrosion resistance, and thermal conductivity. Analyse test data and interpret results to understand material behaviour and performance.
- Materials Selection and Application: Selecting and recommending appropriate materials for specific engineering applications. Assess the requirements and constraints of a given project or application and identify materials that meet the desired performance, durability, and cost criteria. Consider factors such as mechanical properties, environmental compatibility, and manufacturing processes.
- Material Design and Improvement: Designing and improving materials for enhanced performance and functionality. Collaborate with scientists and other engineers to develop new materials or modify existing ones to meet specific application needs. Optimise material compositions, structures, and processing techniques to achieve desired properties and characteristics.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Ensuring the quality and consistency of materials used in manufacturing processes. Establish quality control procedures, conduct inspections, and perform material testing at various stages of production. Identify and resolve material-related issues to maintain product quality and reliability.
- Material Sustainability and Environmental Impact: Assessing the environmental impact of materials and promoting sustainable material choices. Evaluate the life cycle of materials, consider recycling and waste management strategies, and explore eco-friendly alternatives. Strive to minimise environmental harm and improve the sustainability of materials used in various industries.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including researchers, scientists, designers, and manufacturers, to develop and implement material solutions. Communicate technical information effectively, provide guidance, and facilitate knowledge transfer. Work closely with clients, suppliers, and stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure successful material integration.
