Industrial engineers are responsible for investigating and reviewing the logistics and utilisation of personnel, facilities, equipment, and materials, as well as current operational processes and established practices. Their primary objective is to identify areas for improvement in the quality and efficiency of operations within a variety of commercial, industrial, and production environments.

Industrial engineers require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification, reflecting the level of skill needed. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to the formal qualification. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Tasks Include:
- Process Analysis and Optimisation: Analysing existing processes and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement. Conduct time and motion studies, collect data, and assess process efficiency. Identify bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiencies, and develop strategies to optimize processes, increase productivity, and reduce costs.
- Workforce Planning and Optimisation: Assessing workforce requirements and optimising workforce utilisation. Evaluate staffing levels, job assignments, and work schedules to ensure an efficient allocation of human resources. Develop strategies to balance workload, improve task allocation, and enhance workforce productivity.
- Facility and Layout Design: Designing efficient facility layouts that optimise space, workflow, and resource utilisation. Assess facility requirements, analyse flow patterns, and determine optimal equipment placement. Consider factors such as safety, ergonomics, and material handling efficiency to create layouts that maximise productivity and minimise waste.
- Supply Chain Management: Analysing and optimising supply chain processes, including procurement, inventory management, and distribution. Evaluate suppliers, analyse demand patterns, and develop strategies to minimise lead times, optimise inventory levels, and streamline the flow of materials. Improve supply chain efficiency and reduce costs.
- Quality Management and Assurance: Developing and implementing quality management systems and processes. Analyse quality control data, identify areas for improvement, and develop strategies to enhance product quality and reliability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish quality standards, conduct audits, and implement corrective actions.
- Data Analysis and Decision Support: Utilising data analysis techniques and tools to support decision-making. Collect and analyse operational data to identify trends, patterns, and areas of improvement. Use statistical methods, simulation models, and optimisation techniques to support decision-making processes and drive operational improvements.
- Project Management: Managing projects aimed at improving operational efficiency and implementing process changes. Plan, organise, and execute projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and objectives. Coordinate resources, communicate project updates, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including operations, engineering, and management, to drive operational improvements. Communicate effectively, present findings and recommendations, and engage stakeholders in change management processes. Work closely with teams to implement process changes, monitor outcomes, and continuously improve operations.
