Environmental engineers assess the potential impact on air, water, soil, and noise levels in the vicinity of engineering projects. They plan and design equipment and processes for the treatment and safe disposal of waste materials, as well as assess long-term environmental implications. Their role revolves around protecting the environment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and promoting sustainable practices in engineering projects.

Environmental engineers require a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in the field. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be necessary in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required for practicing as an aeronautical engineer. (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
Estimate salary aud$75,000 up to aud$130,000 per year.
Tasks Include:
- Environmental Impact Assessment: Conducting assessments to evaluate the potential environmental impact of engineering projects, including analysing air quality, water quality, soil contamination, and noise levels. Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimise environmental harm.
- Waste Management and Treatment: Planning and designing systems and processes for the safe and effective management, treatment, and disposal of waste materials. This can involve developing waste management plans, designing treatment facilities, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
- Pollution Control and Remediation: Developing strategies and implementing measures to control pollution and remediate contaminated sites. This may include designing and implementing pollution prevention programs, overseeing remediation projects, and monitoring the effectiveness of remediation efforts.
- Environmental Compliance and Permitting: Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and obtaining necessary permits for engineering projects. Work closely with regulatory agencies to understand and meet the requirements related to air emissions, water discharge, waste disposal, and other environmental aspects.
- Sustainable Design and Resource Conservation: Incorporating principles of sustainability into engineering projects by promoting resource conservation, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable materials. Provide expertise in green building design, renewable energy systems, and sustainable water management practices.
- Environmental Monitoring and Data Analysis: Conducting environmental monitoring programs to assess the performance and impact of engineering projects. This involves collecting and analysing data on air quality, water quality, noise levels, and other environmental parameters to ensure compliance with standards and identify areas for improvement.
- Environmental Management Systems: Developing and implementing environmental management systems (EMS) to guide and monitor environmental performance within organizations. This can involve establishing goals, policies, and procedures for environmental sustainability, conducting audits, and promoting continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Engaging with stakeholders, including community members, government agencies, and industry partners, to address environmental concerns, provide information, and ensure transparency. Environmental engineers may participate in public consultations, environmental education programs, and community outreach initiatives.
- Research and Development: Engaging in research and development activities to advance environmental engineering practices, technologies, and solutions. This can involve conducting studies, participating in collaborative research projects, and staying updated on emerging trends and best practices in environmental engineering.
