Diversional Therapists plan, design, coordinate and implement recreation and leisure-based activity programs to support, challenge and enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of individuals.

Indicative Skill Level:
Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.
In Australia:
AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
Registration or licensing may be required.
Estimate salary aud$60,000 up to aud$120,000 per year.
Tasks Include:
- Program Planning and Implementation: Diversional Therapists design and implement leisure activity programs for individuals in healthcare settings and the community. These programs are aimed at promoting social development, enhancing well-being, and providing a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment.
- Needs Assessment: Diversional Therapists conduct assessments to identify the individual needs of clients. They analyse tasks and evaluate clients’ abilities, interests, strengths, weaknesses, and their capacity to engage in various activities and interact with others.
- Resource Management: Diversional Therapists maintain knowledge of available resources within the facility and the community. They leverage these resources to enhance the range and quality of leisure and recreational events offered to clients.
- Event Organization: Diversional Therapists organize and coordinate leisure and recreational events for clients. They plan activities, arrange logistics, and ensure that the events meet the specific needs and interests of the individuals.
- Supervision and Training: Diversional Therapists assist in training and supervising volunteers and staff members involved in leisure activity programs. They provide guidance and support to ensure the effective delivery of programs and services.
- Community Resource Referrals: Diversional Therapists provide information to clients about available support resources within the local community. They connect individuals with relevant services and programs that can further enhance their well-being and social engagement.
- Individualized Approach: Diversional Therapists encourage and support clients to participate in activities that align with their unique needs, interests, skills, and abilities. They adapt programs and activities to suit individual clients, ensuring inclusivity and a personalized approach.
- Through their work, Diversional Therapists contribute to the social development, well-being, and quality of life of individuals. By promoting engagement, social interaction, and meaningful leisure experiences, they help clients cultivate a sense of enjoyment, purpose, and connection within their communities.
