General Practitioners (GPs) and Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) are healthcare professionals who specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of physical and mental illnesses, disorders, and injuries. They also play a crucial role in recommending preventive measures and referring patients to specialist Medical Practitioners, other healthcare professionals, as well as social, welfare, and support workers.

Occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification and at least one year of hospital-based training (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

 

Registration or licensing is a mandatory requirement for this position.

 

Estimate salary aud$130,000 up to aud$380,000 per year.

 

Tasks Include:

 

  • Conducting examinations and questioning patients: Medical practitioners interact with patients to gather their medical history, understand their symptoms, and perform physical examinations to assess their condition.
  • Ordering diagnostic tests: Based on the initial examination, medical practitioners may order laboratory tests, X-rays, or other diagnostic procedures to further evaluate the patient’s condition. They interpret the results of these tests to assist in making a diagnosis.
  • Providing overall care and treatment: Medical practitioners are responsible for providing comprehensive care to their patients. This includes prescribing and administering appropriate treatments, medications, and other remedial measures based on their diagnosis.
  • Monitoring patients’ progress: Medical practitioners closely monitor the progress of their patients throughout the course of treatment. They assess how patients are responding to the prescribed treatments and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Advising on preventive measures: In addition to treating illnesses, medical practitioners also provide guidance on maintaining good health and preventing diseases. They advise patients on matters such as diet, exercise, and other habits that can promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • Referring patients to specialists: When necessary, medical practitioners refer patients to specialized medical practitioners for further evaluation or treatment. They also exchange medical information with these specialists to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Reporting births, deaths, and notifiable diseases: Medical practitioners are responsible for reporting births, deaths, and certain infectious diseases to the appropriate government authorities as required by law.
  • Arranging hospital admissions: In cases where hospitalisation is required, medical practitioners arrange for their patients to be admitted to hospitals and coordinate with hospital staff regarding their care.
