Indicative Skill Level:

In Australia:

AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Electrical Distribution Trades Worker requires a minimum three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

Your key responsibilities can include:

  • Installation and Upgrades: Install new distribution infrastructure, including power lines, transformers, meters, and associated equipment, to extend the electricity distribution network or upgrade existing systems.
  • Safety Compliance: Must adhere to strict safety regulations and standards to protect themselves and the public from electrical hazards. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety procedures when working on live electrical systems.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Use various tools and equipment to troubleshoot complex electrical issues, such as voltage fluctuations, power quality problems, and equipment failures.
  • Emergency Response: In case of natural disasters or severe weather events that cause damage to the distribution network, you are part of the emergency response teams to quickly restore power to affected areas.
  • Metering: Involved in meter installation, maintenance, and reading. They ensure accurate measurement of electricity consumption by consumers.
  • Customer Service: May interact with consumers to address electricity-related issues, provide information on energy conservation, and advise on electrical safety practices.
  • Compliance and Documentation: Keeping accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections is crucial for compliance with industry regulations and standards.
  • Collaborative Work: May often work as part of a team, cooperating with other tradespeople, engineers, and management to ensure the smooth functioning of the electricity distribution system.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: Staying updated with the latest industry regulations and safety standards is essential for you to carry out your duties lawfully and responsibly.
