Earthmoving Plant Operators have diverse responsibilities involving the operation of heavy machinery to perform various tasks in construction and other projects.
The primary duties involve operating heavy machinery to carry out tasks such as excavating earth, ore, and rock, breaking up pavement, roads, rocks, and obstacles, moving and loading earth, rock, and debris, and leveling, smoothing, and compacting surfaces for construction and other projects.
Indicative Skill Level:
The majority of occupations within the electricians’ group require qualifications and experience outlined below.
In Australia:
AQF Certificate II or III, (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)
In New Zealand:
NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)
Earthmoving Plant Operators requires a minimum one year of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.
Estimated salary guide aud$70,000 up to aud$150,000 per year.
Your key responsibilities can include:
- Excavation: Use earthmoving equipment, such as excavators, to dig and remove earth, ore, and rock from construction sites or mining operations.
- Pavement and Road Breaking: Use of specialised machinery, such as breakers or jackhammers, to break up pavement, road surfaces, and rocks to clear the way for construction or road maintenance.
- Debris and Rock Moving: Transport and relocate earth, rocks, debris, and other materials using machinery like dump trucks, loaders, and bulldozers.
- Loading: Load materials onto trucks or into containers for transportation to other locations or disposal sites.
- Leveling and Smoothing: Use graders and other leveling equipment to even out surfaces, ensuring proper drainage and preparing the ground for construction or landscaping.
- Compaction: Use compactors or rollers to compress soil, gravel, or asphalt to create stable and sturdy surfaces.
- Safety Measures: Responsible for ensuring the safe operation of earthmoving equipment and following established safety protocols to protect themselves and others on the job site.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections of the machinery to ensure it operates efficiently and safely.
- Precise Operations: Must have a keen understanding of equipment capabilities to work with precision, avoiding damage to existing structures or utilities.
- Communication: Collaborate with construction teams, site supervisors, and other workers to coordinate activities and achieve project goals.
- Environmental Awareness: Must be mindful of environmental regulations and work to minimize any negative impacts during earthmoving activities.
- Project Coordination: May work on various construction projects, and they need to adhere to project timelines and schedules.
- Soil Analysis: Some earthmoving projects may require an understanding of soil characteristics to determine the appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Specialised Tasks: Depending on the project, you may be involved in specialised tasks, such as trenching, slope stabilisation, or demolition.
