Database and Systems Administrators, in collaboration with ICT Security Specialists, play a crucial role in the effective management and security of an organization’s database management systems, operating systems, and overall security infrastructure. Their primary objective is to ensure the optimal integrity, security, backup, reliability, and performance of databases and systems.

The majority of occupations within this minor group require a bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification. In lieu of a formal qualification, at least five years of relevant experience and/or vendor certification can be considered as a substitute. Both relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

 

Estimate salary aud$70,000 up to over aud$250,000 per year.

 

Tasks Include:

  • Designing and maintaining the architecture of databases, including data structures, tables, dictionaries, and naming conventions, to ensure accuracy and completeness of data master files.
  • Performing operational establishment and preventive maintenance tasks for backups, recovery procedures, and enforcing security and integrity controls.
  • Implementing and administering database documentation, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Testing and troubleshooting database systems and upgrades, including debugging, tracking, reproducing, logging, and resolving identified problems according to approved quality testing scripts, procedures, and processes.
  • Taking responsibility for processes, procedures, and operational management related to system security and disaster recovery planning.
  • Collaborating with security vendors, suppliers, service providers, and external resources, analysing their offerings, recommending, installing, and maintaining software security applications, and monitoring contractual obligations, performance delivery, and service level agreements.
  • Troubleshooting and providing service support to diagnose, resolve, and repair hardware and software malfunctions related to servers, workstations, and communication infrastructure.
  • Preparing and maintaining documentation, policies, instructions, operational procedures, and system logs.
  • Ensuring that the design of computer sites allows proper integration and functionality of all components, and monitoring and adjusting network performance.
  • Continually evaluating the current computer site to identify future network needs and making recommendations for enhancements in the implementation of future servers and networks.
