Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists offer diagnostic assessments, treatment, rehabilitative services, and management for individuals with hearing impairments, communication disorders, and swallowing difficulties.

Occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Tasks Include:

 

  • Conducting comprehensive assessments and diagnosing the degree of hearing loss in clients through various techniques, including audiometric tests.
  • Documenting assessment results and test findings in written reports and referring clients to medical practitioners when necessary.
  • Recommending appropriate solutions for individuals with hearing impairments, such as amplification devices, implantable devices, medical interventions, and assistive listening devices. Providing aural rehabilitation programs to enhance communication abilities.
  • Offering counselling, guidance, and information to clients and their families as part of the overall treatment process.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of noise control and hearing conservation strategies.
  • Administering standardized and informal tests, and observing clients to evaluate the nature and extent of their communication disorders or swallowing difficulties.
  • Providing treatment and management for speech, language, learning, and communication disorders that may arise from developmental factors, disabilities, injuries, or diseases.
  • Advising individuals on proper body positioning and recommending appropriate textures of food and fluids to ensure safe swallowing and prevent choking incidents.
  • Offering information, education, support, and counselling to healthcare professionals, early childhood educators, teachers, individuals affected by communication and swallowing difficulties, as well as their families and caregivers.
